Wine Spectator: Red Gems from Washington State and More

Some great Washington Wine coverage in this issue of Wine Spectator (July 31, 2009).

First, a travel spot on Exploring the Pacific Northwest - From the desert to the coast, a six-day road trip reveals what makes the region's wines and cuisine unique.

Day One: Walla Walla
Day Two: Yakima Valley and Red Mountain
Day Three: Horse Heaven Hills to Willamette Valley
Day Four: Willamette Valley
Day Five: Eola-Amity Hills and Eugene
Day Six: Eugene to Southern Oregon

Second, a good article on Washington's Rock-Solid Reds - Look to this Pacific Northwest state for Cabernet and Syrah at reasonable prices.

Key points:
-2007 was near-perfect conditions
-2008 was another textbook year
(so, keep your eyes out for WA Merlot, Cab, and Syrah from 2007 & 2008)
-Recommended wines include such key producers as Cayuse, Andrew Will, Gorman, K Vintners, Cote Bonneville, Mark Ryan, and Quilceda Creek.

Seattle Metropolitan - 100 Best Wines of the Northwest

Hot off the press - Seattle Metropolitan "Best Wines of the Northwest"!

Here in Seattle, we can’t get enough of wines from Washington and Oregon they just taste like home. Yet these days oenophiles the world over are falling for our cabs and our merlots, our pinots and our chardonnays. To create a list of the best Pacific Northwest wines currently in release, Seattle Met enlisted wine critic Conde Cox, a current candidate for the prestigious master of wine certification, who braved serious palate fatigue from tasting over 1,000 different bottles…

This is a first that I know of Seattle Met putting out a Top 100 list of the Northwest’s best wines, and I love it! Top 100 lists always provide a great point of reference for discovering new and exciting wines and wineries. They did a really nice job with it too, including aging estimates, Vino Vocab, Frugal Shopping (easy-to-find wines under $25), a Varietal Cheat Sheet, Intro to Northwest AVAs, and... ...

Betz Sets The Bar With Top Washington Wine Scores

Huge scores for Washington State in the latest issue of Wine Enthusiast, with much of the credit going to Betz Family Winery. Bob Betz is just an absolute phenom. Not only is he one of the finest winemakers in the state and top wine minds in the country, but everything he touches turns to gold. And to top it off, Bob is one of the humblest winemakers ever to coax juice from a grape. Never would he take the credit for his own success. And nothing but success has he had.

Wine Enthusiast – August 2008

Red Blends
96 pts – Betz Family Winery 2005 Le Parrain Red Wine, Columbia Valley ($85)
95 pts – Betz Family Winery 2005 Clos de Betz Red Wine, Columbia Valley ($40)

How do the Wine Scores equate to each other?

Different people like to rate wines in different ways, and we aim to please. So we give you 2 options.

You can rate wine on a scale of 0-5 Glasses, or for finer detail, you can rate wine on a 100 point scale.

We do the conversion for you so all Wine Ratings display both values. The table below shows you the conversion:

= 50 points or less.
= 51 - 57 points.
= 58 - 62 points.
= 63 - 67 points.
= 68 - 72 points.
= 73 - 77 points.
= 78 - 82 points.
= 83 - 87 points.
= 88 - 92 points.
= 93 - 96 points.
