Wine Spectator: Red Gems from Washington State and More

Some great Washington Wine coverage in this issue of Wine Spectator (July 31, 2009).

First, a travel spot on Exploring the Pacific Northwest - From the desert to the coast, a six-day road trip reveals what makes the region's wines and cuisine unique.

Day One: Walla Walla
Day Two: Yakima Valley and Red Mountain
Day Three: Horse Heaven Hills to Willamette Valley
Day Four: Willamette Valley
Day Five: Eola-Amity Hills and Eugene
Day Six: Eugene to Southern Oregon

Second, a good article on Washington's Rock-Solid Reds - Look to this Pacific Northwest state for Cabernet and Syrah at reasonable prices.

Key points:
-2007 was near-perfect conditions
-2008 was another textbook year
(so, keep your eyes out for WA Merlot, Cab, and Syrah from 2007 & 2008)
-Recommended wines include such key producers as Cayuse, Andrew Will, Gorman, K Vintners, Cote Bonneville, Mark Ryan, and Quilceda Creek.

Washington Wine In The News -- 05/22/09

Washington wineries wanna go where nobody likes their name
Ingrid Stegemoeller, Herald staff writer

Legislators from Washington state and across the country have asked a U.S. trade representative to work with the European Community to allow U.S. wines whose labels contain terms such as "chateau" and "clos" to again be sold within the European countries.
A 2006 agreement that allowed the sale of U.S. wines using "traditional terms" was terminated last September, and as of March those wines were no longer allowed into European Community markets for sale, according to a letter sent Wednesday to Ambassador Ronald Kirk from Reps. Doc Hastings, R-Wash., Jay Inslee, D-Wash., and several other members of Congress.

Wines that have registered trademarks or those using the particular terms continuously before May 2002 weren't included in the agreement, said Keith Love, vice president for communications & corporate affairs at Ste. Michelle Wine Estates.

Washington's 11th AVA anounced - Lake Chelan

Washington now has it's 11th official AVA with the addition of Lake Chelan. This is the 2nd designation for the state this year. Below is a press statement released by the Washington Wine Commission...

SEATTLE (April 28, 2009) – As the Washington wine industry continues to grow, so does its number of officially recognized vineyard areas. Washington is adding another American Viticultural Area (AVA) to its list of ten. The newest is the Lake Chelan AVA, which falls entirely within the Columbia Valley AVA, the larger appellation now containing eight of the state’s designated grape growing regions. The new appellation has received final approval and will officially go into effect in late May.

Due to its higher elevation and proximity to a large, deep body of water, the Lake Chelan AVA has distinctive properties not found in its neighbors to the south. For one, the natural processes that formed the topography of Lake Chelan gave the area soils...

The Recession on West Coast & Washington Wine

So, how is the Washington wine industry doing in these tough times? Not bad, since the largest winery Chateau Ste. Michelle, who produces approximately 95% of the State's wine, offers most of their bottles at the prices consumers are reaching for. But luxury and boutique brands are definitely scrambling to diversify. This might be a good opportunity for some of those newbies, who came out of the gate with dollar signs in their eyes, to regroup and bring their wines back to a more reasonable price...

West Coast Wineries Wrestle with Recession

New Snipes Mountain AVA - Washington's 10th

On February 20th, one of Washington's first grape-growing regions will become the state's 10th official AVA. Snipes Mountain AVA, located in the middle of the Yakima Valley, will be the second smallest in Washington at 4,145 acres. Red Mountain currently takes that dubious honor at 4,040 acres.

The first vineyard plantings took place on Snipes Mountain between 1914 and 1917, with the first winery in the area starting in 1934 - Upland Winery. A couple of the defining factors, which make Snipes Mountain unique as an AVA, include it's location in the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains and the effects that the Lake Missoula floods had on the soil.

View more information on Snipes Mountain AVA.

A petition for the Lake Chelan AVA is still pending.

San Francisco Chronicle - Top 100 Wines 2008

Top 100 lists are the norm this time of year. Here's another from the San Francisco Chronicle with several key Washington wines including a callout to local producer Andrew Will...

"It wasn't difficult, for instance, to find plenty of good $100 Cabernet in the exceptional, and plentiful, 2005 vintage; that task seemed far tougher at the $30 price point. Yet we found it hard to beat the 2005 Andrew Will Ciel du Cheval Red Mountain Red Wine from Washington State. With it, the peerless Chris Camarda offers a reminder as to why Cabernet Franc and Merlot are the backbone of some of the world's greatest wines."
