PAIRING YOUR BURGER WITH THE RIGHT WINE

It’s no real surprise that hamburgers are at the top of the list as America’s most popular grilled food, according to the 2004 Weber® GrillWatch™ survey. Especially this time of year when the grills are cooking overtime. And, nothing goes with summer better than a grilled burger and the right glass of wine. So, whether you're into bold flavors or basic toppings, top off your burger with a glass of wine. Here are some suggestions for the right wine to go with your burger topping du jour.

Basic Cheese Burger – Merlot

Grilled pineapple – Fruity Chardonnay (white) or Beaujolais (red)

Grilled white onions and mushrooms with Swiss cheese – Sangiovese (or Chianti)

Pickles (or relish) and mustard – White Zinfandel
Offering a soft...

Pink Door - A Seattle Favorite in Pike's Market

The Pink Door

Pike Place Market

http://www.thepinkdoor.net

The Pink Door is a favorite among locals and out of town guests alike. Touted as an Italian-American Restaurant & Cabaret Lounge this tucked away hot spot in Post Alley offers a little bit of everything for everyone.

The main dining room provides an intimate and eclectic setting to enjoy a candlelit dinner with your special someone or an enjoyable evening with family and friends. If you’re looking for something a little more social, or if the dining room is unavailable which can often be the case on weekends, then the bar area or outdoor patio in the summer are great options.

The menu is always a crowd pleaser with much of your traditional Italian inspired fair made to perfection. I don’t believe I’ve ever had a bad meal at the Pink Door. The pastas are usually my go to dish, but sometimes I’ll be tempted by a juicy lamb chop or fresh fish.

If you’re there on a weekend and feel a slight breeze on the back of your neck... ...

It’s always nice to stumble upon a new wine bar. And with the rapidly growing popularity of wine these days it seems like there’s one popping up every month. And even though Verve Wine Bar & Cellar has been open longer than a month it is my newest discovery.
Located in Seattle’s bustling Columbia City neighborhood Verve offers a nice spot to enjoy a glass, a flight, a bottle, or all of the above with a bight to eat. The wine list seems very well put together, and the staff is more than willing to help you pick something out. I had a Chilean Carmenere (2004 Envero) that was quite exceptional, along with a delicious selection of cheeses. Verve also offers a retail section for those that feel like taking something home.
While I don’t make it down to Columbia City very often I would definitely stop back by Verve for the opportunity to discover more wines and sample some of the other food options.

Bizzarro - A neighborhood Italian joint with flavor

Bizzarro is now my second favorite neighborhood Italian joint in Seattle, second only to Mamma Melina Ristorante. Like MMR's the food is exceptional but space is limited, and it can fill up quick. However, what Bizzarro might be lacking in seats it more than makes up for it in personality. Hanging from all areas of the restaurant are an eclectic mix of art, antiques, crafts, and...well...junk actually. I could probably eat there ten times and never notice everything.
The wine list is small but like the restaurant itself, quite good for it's size. I'm not extremely well versed on Italian wines (something I'm working to remedy), but the one Italian wine that is currently my absolute favorite happened to be up on the chalkboard as a bottle special for the evening - Le Gode 1999 Brunello. Unfortunately it was out, but they did have plenty of other nice regional and international wines to choose from.
If you're in the mood for to share an exceptional meal along side a packed...

Morton's Steakhouse - Let's get some personality up in this joint!

Oh Morton’s, so much build up for one steakhouse. Not to say that the steaks aren’t good or that Morton’s isn’t one of the best steakhouses in Seattle…because when it’s all said and done it probably is. (Granted that Seattle is a city with only about a handful of really good steakhouses.) However, I am a firm believer that personality goes a long way in restaurants and I don’t get a lot of charisma out of Morton’s. Let me take a moment to explain.

In my opinion Morton’s is a great place to stop in after work for a drink and a bite in the bar, especially if you make it in during happy hour for the filet sandwiches. Hmmmmmmm. Good stuff! But hanging out in the bar is far different than dining in the restaurant, because normally the basement dining room doesn’t have a whole lot of energy to it. And I have even eaten there on one of the busiest nights of the year – New Year’s Eve.

Don’t... ...

Trellis, located in the new Heathman Hotel in downtown Kirkland, is bound to become a local favorite. Because after just recently spending a couple hours there late one afternoon it is already a favorite of mine.

Unlike many of the other waterfront eateries nearby, which focus on quick bites for drop in visitors, Trellis actually offers a touch of class and quality in both its food and drink selection. Much of the Pacific Northwest cuisine actually comes from the personal garden of executive chef Brian Scheehser. Some of which go from garden to plate in a matter of hours, not shipped halfway across the country.

Because I was in at an off time between lunch and dinner I was not able to try any of the standard menu items. But that’s just fine with me because one of my favorite places to get to know a new restaurant is from a bar stool anyway. The bar menu was excellent offering a fresh assortment of surf, turf, salad and soups. I enjoyed a bowl of Young...

Icon Grill offers an eclectic approach to Seattle fine dining with the interior comprised of assorted eye-catching trinkets tastefully displayed throughout. While this helps create a lively playful atmosphere each table provides an intimate experience for diners. The food is fantastic with a selection as varied as the décor, with each dish very well prepared and quite delicious. They offer a good wine list with a lot of local and regional favorites. It’s not overly lengthy but you’re sure to find something to pair with every item on the food menu. Enjoy Icon for lunch, dinner, or just a casual glass of wine.

Meritage Restaurant and Wine Bar offers a comfortable place for hotel guests, shoppers, or area business persons to enjoy a northwest inspired meal and quality glass of wine. If you’re visiting for lunch try the ceasar salad topped with delicious grilled salmon and paired with a crisp Washington Chardonnay or juicy Oregon Pinot Noir. If you just want a snack that’s also filling try one of their thin crust pizzas with a glass of local Merlot or Cabernet.
Their day list varies, sometimes offering more local gems and sometimes going with more traditional restaurant industry selections. You can also visit the nearby Fine Wine & Cigars to purchase a bottle of your own, which they will be more than happy to open for you for a nominal charge.
During the warmer days of summer the outside patio is a perfect place to relax and take in the nice weather. Or, in the winter months gather around the fireplace, located outside the bar adjacent to the hostess stand, and...

A new wine restaurant/bar in Seattle...weird! It's not like there hasn't been a lot of those lately. But then again there isn't one quite like this. It's cool. It's contemporary. But beyond all it's very friendly, comfortable and a definite must for any fledging wine novice or wizened old pro.

One of the best parts besides the elegant comfort food and delicious wines is the stylish user friendly menus. Wines are organized by style and how it's experienced, rather than varietal or place. Are you looking for something light and crisp or rich and bold. The foods are categorized the same way, each with their own wine style (or even beer) recommendation. There's even a key for various symbols representing house favorites, cult wines, organic wines, etc.

The wait staff was very helpful and friendly, giving honest opinions based on experience rather than ticket sales. This is a definite must for anyone in Seattle or visiting. I sat outside on their sidewalk patio, due... ...

Food and Wine Pairing at FareStart

Just the other night I attended a Washington WineAmbassadors Food & Wine Pairing event with some friends at FareStart. If you’re not familiarwith FareStart, they are an organization that helps homeless and disadvantagedpeople learn valuable skills in the food service industry in order to gainemployment and achieve a fresh start.

The event, held in FareStart’s downtown restaurant &training center, was put on by the Ambassador program and hosted by MasterSommelier Shayn Bjornholm. The setting was elegant but open and lighthearted. The five-course menu focused on Northwestern ingredients and was paired with classicWashington Varietals, including Riesling, Semillon, Merlot, Syrah and CabernetSauvignon.

As the first dish was being served, roasted peach saladpaired with a Poet’s Leap Riesling, Shayn ran over his philosophy for food andwine pairing including a list of seven general guidelines to follow. Then everyother dish he would get up and share a little... ...

Pomegranate Bistro, located just off 520 in Redmond, is a perfect spot for a casual lunch and glass of wine during the busy workweek. The small 80-seat restaurant is situated in the front of the house with a considerable amount of space in the back dedicated to the 14,000 square foot kitchen. The "view" comes into play because the inside of the kitchen is completely transparent through the large windows facing the dining area, allowing guests to keep a watchful eye on the inner workings. While most of this kitchen is allotted for owner/chef Lisa Dupar's catering company there is also a wood burning oven that pumps out all of the fire bread used in various savory creations such as creative pizzas, sandwiches, and salads, available on the dining menu. The interior, while very open and warehouse like, manages to pull off the small contemporary cafe/bistro look with brightly painted walls, eye catching imagery, and other modern stylings. Definitely stop by for lunch and enjoy a... ...

Upscale metropolitan dining meets old-world hospitality in Seattle’s Barolo’s Ristorante. From the family that brought you famed Italian restaurant Mamma Melina in Seattle’s University District, the Varchetta brothers now bring another iconic eatery to downtown. This location, noticeably more upscale than family friendly Mamma Melina’s, still provides a flavor of Italy’s northern region but in a much more contemporary setting.
The interior is a thing of beauty, with style and design comparable to any modern art museum, but the friendly staff and lively conversation definitely make it much more inviting. The white candles, candelabras, curtains and chandeliers contrast marvelously with the dark wood accents and interior. With numerous tables packed into such a narrow dining area things may initially appear a little too close for comfort, turning your quiet dinner into quite the public event, but once you sit down the setting actually becomes quite...

Congratulations to Smash Wine Bar and other Award Winners

In the latest issue of Wine Spectator 3,955 restaurants from around the world were honored as part of Spectator's 2007 Dining Guide and Restaurant Awards. In their words, "Wine Spectator's Restaurant Awards recognize restaurants whose wine lists offer interesting selections, are appropriate to their cuisine and appeal to a wide range of wine lovers." After meeting these and other basic requirements the qualifying restaurants are then presented one of three awards - Award of Excellence (3,131 winners), Best of Award of Excellence (748 winners), and Grand Award (76 winners).
Washington State had approximately 70 award winners, with one Grand Award presented to Canlis. Included in the winners was one of our local favorites Smash Wine Bar & Bistro who received an Award of Excellence. While there were several other very good Washington restaurants that also received awards as well, it was nice to see Smash on there given their relaxed "snob free" atmosphere...
