Winery Volunteering

I am often asked what it takes to be a Winery Volunteer, so I thought I would jot down a few random things that came to mind.

The first thing is time; you have to be available when the winery has need of help. Most small Winery owners have “Day Jobs” so most likely the times for volunteering will be outside of normal work hours, evenings and weekends. This is advantageous to us part time winery workers as in most cases we also have “Day Jobs.” Because this tends to be the luck of coincidences it is advisable to sign up at many wineries then chances are something will match your schedule.

The second is a desire to learn, every winery does things a little different so you have to be willing to learn how they "do it." Some have invested in equipment to automate some of the processes others do everything by hand and each winemaker has their own philosophy of what best suits their wine making methods. While you should not be afraid to share your...

My Wife was otherwise occupied with school work so I took my eldest son with me to try out this place that had been recommended by a couple of friends.  Not sure what I expected but was blown away by the quality of food and service.  We started with a wine flight and the Warm Feta Cheese plate.  Then came the freshest and most balanced Ceasar Salad ever, good flavor without overpowering the romaine.  Next was the roasted duck deboned and perfectly prepared.  grilled veggies and Isreali couscous as sides.  to top it off we tried the deserts the Lemon Creme Brulee was silky and wonderful and paired with an early Muscat Yum, and the Chocalate Decadence cake, Naughty Version (just a hint of Cayene). paired with a Shiraz.  This is definately a place to take someone you wish to impress.  You better make reservations on Friday or Saturday night as it fills up fast.  Steve and Martin are the most gracious of hosts and I hope to soon be great...

Washington vs Chilean Wines

Join our group on Friday, May 14th for an early evening tasting the great Washington wines of Edmonds Winery and Peng Wines that are imported from Chile. Edmonds Winery is opening their Tasting Roomin Woodinville specially for us...AND...everyone gets to taste at least 10 wines (5 each) presented by experts...AND...they're including some complimentary breads and cheeses... AND BEST YET...you get all this for a measly $15... that's right only $15, if you buy your ticket online by May 10th! Think about it... you get to try 10 wines, presented by wine experts, at the winery tasting room, open exclusively for us, and they are including some lite apps to go with it...for only $15...if you buy your ticket online by May 10th. How great a deal is that! Now, here's an extra kicker in this great deal... if you buy any of the wines that you try, you get a $5 credit towards the purchase...for each winery... meaning, if you buy 1-bottle of Edmonds...

Spanking good time!

The Spank Monkey Wine release at Sojen Cellars on April 24th was a blast. The wine sold out of it's first bottling (15 Cases) with another barrel to be bottled next month. The Music was provided by May Palmer the Queen of Ivory Soul, if you want an energetic performer book this lady. Ron Hansen and his wife Setsuko have a hit on their hands with this Cabernet/Merlot Blend. Master crafted by Max Jensen of Sojen Cellars Winery, this wine is very drinkable and value priced. Keep an eye out for the next bottling you really won't want to miss out on this.

A revolution is occuring, Everett now has a winery that is also a great entertainment spot.  Featuring local talent with no cover charge.  My first visit was a Jazz Band and last week it was May Palmer, Queen of Ivory Soul.  The wines are a real draw too.  To be released on April 24th is Spank Monkey a value priced 50/50 Cab Merlot blend.  May Palmer will be performing again so you won't want to miss this one.

#WAMerlot is a hit

Last night (March 25, 2010) I participated in what may be the largest wine tasting ever. The #WAMerlot was a twitter event where anyone anywhere was encouraged to taste a Washington Merlot wine and share their experiences on Twitter. I was invited to host this event for Russells Dining & Bar in Bothell, WA. The Merlot we had for tasting was the 2007 Hestia Cellars Merlot. I had my laptop set up and tweeted the comments of the visitors as well as my own experiences. All Tweets included the hashtag (#) of #WAMerlot. This event was created and organized by a fellow tweeter Josh Wade (@NectarWine). Many wine shops, wineries, and restaurants hosted events around this and was a great success. I look forward to the next Washington Wine event.

My first experience with this venue was for a tweetup where we were served samples of their woodfired flat bread pizzas and their house wine Wrongo Dongo.  This wine from Jumilla Spain called Monastrell is a Mouvedre and is an awesome bargain.  The Pizzas ranged from Blue cheese with figs to procuitto with truffle oil all were superb.  My next experience was for Valentines dinner (on Saturday the 13th) The cocktails were delish and the starters were Mussels and Duck Sliders, both were devoured by our group.  Then we had a range of pizzas and one had the shortribs not a disparaging comment from anyone.  Service was spot on on a very busy night.  This will become a regular date night spot.  I also overheard they are working to increase their local (WA) wine list. Check their website for the menu.

I was invited to a tweetup at Epulo, which for the uninitiated is a live meeting of Twitter folks to sample then twitter about a subject, be it food wine or some other subject.  I invited my friends from Edmonds Winery and were greeted by the General Manager and @incrediblechef who were hosting the event.  We were served samples of their wood fired pizza and $2 glasses of Wrongo Dongo Mouvedre from Spain an awesome 92-94 point wine.  The pizzas were tasty, my favorite was the Prosciutto with shaved Grana Padano, garlic, truffle oil, arugula . All the samples were great, with a thin crispy crust and just the right amount of toppings.  I made reservations for Sat the 13th for my wife and I to try their full menu.  The atmosphere is relaxed yet trendy and the service was amazing.

This is the house wine at Alligator Soul in Everett (Twitter @Alligator_Soul) not bad for a house wine (but then any thing beats box wines in most cases).

WineCHATr passes 500 connections!

There are now over 500 listed connections, so if each of you get two new members and they get two new members this thing will really take off.  Next time you visit your favorite winery ask them if they are on WineCHATr or if you have a winery ask your customer's if they are on WineCHATr.

Prosperity and Peace in the new year!

Here's to the new year and hopes to make the last two a distant memory. Although not all memories of the last two years are to be forgotten, I made some great friends and started a new career (thanks to an untimely lay off). I found a community of winemakers and wine drinkers here on WineCHATr that educate and entertain me. I have seen the Woodinville Wine community grow in the midst of a recession and for the most part, prosper. From the fruit I tasted at Crush last year, we are in for a great future. It is my wish that everyone look at the positives they experienced in 2009 and build on them for an even more positive future.

How do the Wine Scores equate to each other?

Different people like to rate wines in different ways, and we aim to please. So we give you 2 options.

You can rate wine on a scale of 0-5 Glasses, or for finer detail, you can rate wine on a 100 point scale.

We do the conversion for you so all Wine Ratings display both values. The table below shows you the conversion:

= 50 points or less.
= 51 - 57 points.
= 58 - 62 points.
= 63 - 67 points.
= 68 - 72 points.
= 73 - 77 points.
= 78 - 82 points.
= 83 - 87 points.
= 88 - 92 points.
= 93 - 96 points.
= 97 - 100 points
